Chamber

Chamber
One of the departments of the king's household which evolved from his chamber, that part of the palace or castle which contained his private sleeping quarters. Four knights would sleep immediately outside the door as bodyguards. (The rest of the household slept in the hall.) By the 13c, this chamber had become a busy office with its own clerks and close servants. The officer in change was the *chamberlain who had become in the late 14c one of the five senior officers of the crown or royal administration. The Latin word for a chamber was camera.
